Early on, connection is survival. As we move from infancy to childhood and through to adulthood, the parts of us that are not met with acceptance get pushed away. The parts that earn it get amplified and performed. By adulthood, many of us are living from a false self that was assembled, piece by piece, in service of gaining acceptance and validation. We contort ourselves into roles, wear masks, and perform. The more unwanted parts of ourselves we deny, the more we overcompensate, overperform, overwork, people please, strive for perfectionism. Once these tactics can no longer be sustained the system collapses, helplessness ensues, and poor health conditions arise.
Most of this happens outside of our conscious awareness.
As well as staying connected and accepted, another vital human need is for growth and meaning. However, we cannot grow from a foundation that is not authentic by nature. This presents a conflict between our true self underneath and our false self on the surface. This is psychological stress, a constant pressure that keeps us stuck and sick. It does not matter how much somatic, cognitive, or nervous system work you do - if this split exists, our health suffers.
